FAIRY DOGMOTHERS & DOGFATHERS!

We are fortunate to have these little Angels who help The Poodle Patch.

11/04/08 Thanks Pat! You are a wonderful and dear supporter of The Poodle Patch. We can buy dog food, some flea prevention, and we are getting Holly vetted all Thanks to Pat!

10/30/08 Thanks Sharon! Bud's new Mom made a generous donation in the form of payment to our account at Westridge Animal Hospital. It helped out tremendously. We have had many little ones lately who have required more than just our general full vetting. Poor Sly was thrown from a car. Roxie and Paco had to have heartworm treatment recently, Cajun's nose was horribly infected, Rosanna just looked and smelled like death to start with, and food is not cheap for sure....I could go on and on. But I would like to thank Sharon and all of the other Fairy Dog Mothers and Fathers out there. We are making a huge difference in the lives of the dogs here in our little town of Texarkana, Texas & Arkansas thanks to you all.

9/29/08 Thanks Sheena! Our newest Fairy DogMother has made a generous donation. An amount which is enough to keep us in dog food for several weeks or fully vet two dogs in our care. Thanks Sheena!

9/05/08 Thanks Steve! Our new Fairy Dogfather could not have come along at a better time. Your donation will fully vet four dogs in our care! WOW!Thank you so much!

8/25/08 Thanks Pat! Pat is keeping us in flea and tick prevention. Thanks for the recent donation Pat!

7/28/08-Thanks Rhonda! Thanks for the beds, collars, and leashes. And thanks for the dog food for everyone in our care for 2 weeks! This is a big blessing. Thank You!!

WHO WE ARE

We are primarily a Standard Poodle Rescue. We rescue all others in need when there is space available. We are a small group of volunteers trying to make a difference. We can always use more volunteers.

For those of you who do not know, I am the daughter of a Poodle Groomer who owned and operated a very reputable Poodle Grooming shop in Little Rock for over 30 years. I own two Rescue Standard Poodles. I have Poodle in my blood. Both of my Standards have earned Canine Good Citizen Awards and they are certified Therapy Dogs with Therapy Dogs International. They work meeting folks in the Texarkana area nursing homes and hospitals. I have been volunteering with and grooming Poodles for over 25 years. Poodles are obviously my focus. However if we have room we will help any other breed or mix breed in need.

I was introduced to volunteering when I was in the third grade and have done so ever since then. When I was a kid we went every week to meet the Animal Control Officer for Little Rock Animal Control. My mom and other volunteers would pick dogs who they deemed would do well meeting strangers. Then they would bathe and groom them. That Wed-EVERY single Wednesday we would meet at the nursing home. The Animal Control Officer would pull up and bring out our latest treasure for everyone in the nursing home to meet and greet and snuggle. At that time, it was the law that they transport them. And then they were turned over to us for just a few hours of fun-FUN for them and all of our elderly folks waiting to meet us! Very unlike today's Therapy Dog laws. Now a stringent test is required for a dog to pass. A test which I am proud to say both of my Standards have passed and are now Official Therapy Dogs who visit nursing homes, hospitals, and schools in the Texarkana area. Back when I was a kid we went to every room for the next few hours just visiting with our pound puppies. The dogs were as happy as the people. And the happiest was the Animal Control Officer whose job it was to meet us. Just to see the smiles on the folks was great. I knew every single person there and they knew me like they raised me. My mother has received several Mayor's Awards for her volunteer work at numerous shelters in Little Rock. She is still a volunteer at The Sherwood Animal Shelter where I too was a volunteer until I moved to Texarkana. I was recently awarded the 2007 Artex Animal Welfare Inc. Volunteer of the Year Award here in Texarkana.

I have volunteered and fundraised for many organizations here in Texarkana since I moved here. I created and organized a fundraiser for both The Texarkana Humane Society Inc. and Artex Animal Welfare Inc. in 2005 and 2006. Both groups are 501 (C) 3 organizations and each received over $5,000 from these fundraisers. I could not have been happier with the results from my work. I have also organized other other fundraisers for good local causes such as The Texarkana Baptist Orphanage and Fallen Biker fundraisers. In addition, before starting The Poodle Patch here in Texarkana, l logged over 1,300 hours at The Texarkana Animal Shelter the last half of 2007 and the beginning of 2008. I took pictures(of animals at The Texarkana Animal Shelter) by myself or with another volunteer-Diana, I met online and we posted them to my Poodle Patch petfinder site as a courtesy to the shelter and animals there needing adoption. And we got MANY adoptions. I groomed and bathed nearly 100 dogs and cats at The Texarkana Animal Shelter. I also took pictures for Pet of the week which appeared in the local newspaper, I also helped sell ads for the newspaper spot that benefits the shelter's adoptable pets, I cleaned and groomed animals, did laundry, greeted folks who wanted to adopt, and coordinated Specific Breed Rescues.

I got serious about The Poodle Patch in May 2007. We rescued five different Standard Poodles in two months time. They were all from right here in Texarkana. Our first three came in together all heartworm positive and matted beyond belief along with numerous other medical conditions. I called The Texarkana Humane Society and they helped me establish a rescue account with Westridge Animal Hospital. That's how we got started. I will always be grateful to The Texarkana Humane Society Inc. for this. Now all three of the original Standards are healthy and happy in their new homes. Lucy, Gracie, and Bella started this. No pet should ever be subjected to the condition they were in. It was heartbreaking. Now a year later, we have over 300 pets on our Happy Tails page. Some are from the Texarkana Animal Shelter where I volunteered 30 hours weekly for almost a year. I got many of them posted on our petfinder site and adopted. We have helped out a lot of "honorary" poodles along the way, and even some cats-thus the name The Poodle Patch & Friends Rescue of Texarkana.

It has brought me great joy to help these animals. Thank you so much for considering adopton with us. At the bare minimum, our animals are vet checked, spayed or neutered, vaccinated including rabies, fecal tested and parasite free, heartworm tested and treated if needed, on heart worm prevention and in most cases house trained. Some of our pets receive dentals, mange treatment, orthopedic surgery.....you name it, we have done it. They leave us in excellent health and happy.

ADOPTING WITH US

To apply, send a request for application to poodlepatch@yahoo.com. It is a simple downloadable Word document. You can fill it in, and email it back. We can also fax it or use the good old United States Postal Service.

Completed, APPROVED applications take PRIORITY over ALL others. It is advised you complete an application and get it approved if you believe you want to adopt with us. Emails are answered quickly. All of our pets are in private foster homes. We require a completed, approved application BEFORE setting up a meeting for any of our pets. We do not ship our pets.

Some of the animals we take in require extensive medical treatment. Adoption fees vary. We are volunteers who work regular jobs. We do not have an actual "facility". All of the pets are in foster homes. Email poodlepatch@yahoo.com is the best way to contact us and we check it multiple times daily. My (Amanda) personal cell phone is (903) 701-3571. I prefer that you at least have an approved application or excellent vet references before calling. I check emails all day. It may take days to return a phone message.

MEETING OUR ADOPTABLE PETS

From time to time, we are at PetSmart on Saturdays, check our event calendar. All of our pets are in private foster homes and appointments must be made to meet the pets. There is no facility or one place. Our pets are in foster homes in Arkansas and Texas. We are happy to arrange a meeting for you and your new friend you may be considering AFTER you have completed an application.

Where is Texarkana? Well, we are on the border of Texas and Arkansas in the southwest corner of Arkansas and the northeast corner of Texas. We are 2 hours from Little Rock, Ar., 1.5 hours from Shreveport, LA., and 3 hours from Dallas, TX.

Since we operate via foster homes and we are always looking for fosters. If you would like to help save a life by being a foster home please email us so we can give you the details. It's simple, the more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save. We would love to have you and you will love the reward you get from it.
